Halloween Decorations and Selling Your Home

Spooky Season is Here! But Those Selling Their Home Should Be Cautious With The Decorations.

Make sure not to scare off potential buyers this Halloween season!

There are a variety of things to keep in mind if you'd like to decorate a house you're trying to sell this season. Before you put up any Halloween decorations, make sure to take your listing photos or have it done by someone else. You want the listing photos to have a timeless feel (not dated by the holiday) and as clean cut as possible since this is your first chance to garner interest in your home.

Once photos are over, decorations can enhance the showing experience. Outdoor decorations should be fun and spooky, but not over the top. The twelve foot skeleton from Home Depot will have to wait until you're settled at your new abode, but some fake pumpkins that won't create a mess wouldn't go amiss. The idea is to have your seasonal fun, but to make sure you don't detract from your home's charm for anyone who might be looking to buy. Too many decorations or offensive ones could do just that, or make it hard for a buyer to envision your house as their new home. Play it safe, keep it basic and save the yard skeleton for next year.

Indoor decorations should be kept as basic and minimal as possible. Anyone on a tour of your house should feel like they are touring a potential home, not visiting a ticketless haunted attraction. Again, any potential decorations shouldn't detract or distract from the charm of your home and anything over the top like a giant, fake spider perched on web-coated stairs is also going to have to wait for a new home to be shown off alongside the yard skeleton.

Some decorations to avoid both inside and out are:

  • Anything with gore or blood (especially if anyone who might be touring your house has children!)

  • Anything rotting (pumpkins, gourds, etc - not a pretty sight and the smell isn't pleasant either)

  • Any decorations that are overtly or overly scary (clowns, anything headless, zombies, etc).
