Packing & Moving Tips for Sellers

Selling your house?

Here's some tips for packing and moving that will make selling your home less stressful!

Firstly, your best bet is to start packing as early as possible for your move. Below is a rough timeline of when you would want to accomplish certain packing goals.

  • Get supplies together (boxes, tape, markers, padding for anything breakable)

  • Sort/organize (figure out what you're keeping/taking with and what you're donating/throwing out/giving away, then dispose of or pack as needed)

  • Pack up any items that aren't in daily use (anything you won't need for the move, any holiday paraphernalia, coats if it's spring or summer, etc.)

  • Pack everything but things that are needed for daily use

  • Pack remaining daily use things, while still leaving the ability to access as needed

Secondly, decide how you're moving. Are you going to wing it by yourself? Ask some friends for help? Hire a moving company? A realtor will usually have local connections and can help you find a reputable moving company, if that's the route you choose to go. Keep in mind the costs and pros/cons associated with each option, then select what one will work best for you.

Thirdly, get organized. This means you're going to want to try to keep all the items from the same room in however many boxes and try not to mix them. Unpacking and unloading are that much easier, when each box is clearly labeled with what room it needs to go into. Color coding could also come in handy here.

Fourthly, have a plan. If that means tackling one room at a time until everything that can be packed is packed or if that means you just want to jump from room to room as the mood strikes. Whatever method works best for you, employ it. Breaking the entire mess down into smaller, more manageable tasks may also help, especially if the overall process seems daunting or overwhelming.

Finally, remember you're not alone in this. If this seems too overwhelming or too daunting a task, there are full service moving companies. They will pack, move and unpack for you, though they do cost more than a moving company that simply transports your boxes. However, the trade off for a full service moving company is that they can pack up your entire house in days, instead of the weeks or months it would take you on your own.
